NATURAL PEARL CARE
South Sea Pearls — Among the World’s Most Precious Organic Gems
South Sea pearls are organic gemstones born from living oysters, and their extraordinary lustre is the result of thousands of delicate layers of nacre built over years beneath the ocean’s surface. Unlike mineral gemstones, pearls are uniquely sensitive to their environment, and with considered care, their beauty will endure for generations.
Daily Care
We recommend that pearls be the last item you put on and the first you remove. Perfume, hairspray, cosmetics, and skincare products contain chemicals and acids that may dull the nacre over time. After each wear, gently wipe your pearls with a soft, slightly damp cloth to remove any residue from the skin’s natural oils.
Cleaning
Never submerge your pearls in water, and avoid ultrasonic or steam cleaners entirely. Instead, use a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with lukewarm water. If a deeper clean is required, a mild, pH-neutral soap may be used sparingly. Allow your pearls to air-dry completely on a soft cloth before storing.
Storage
Pearls should always be stored separately from other jewellery to prevent scratching. A soft pouch or the Adelle Louise presentation box in which your piece was delivered is ideal. Avoid airtight containers, as pearls are composed of organic material and benefit from a small amount of ambient moisture to prevent the nacre from becoming brittle.
What to Avoid
- Direct contact with perfume, hairspray, sunscreen, and household cleaning agents.
- Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or extreme heat, which may cause discolouration or dehydration.
- Contact with abrasive surfaces, rough fabrics, or other gemstones and metals that may scratch the nacre.
- Submerging pearls in chlorinated or salt water, including swimming pools, spas, and the ocean.
Restringing
For pearl strands and bracelets, we recommend professional restringing every twelve to eighteen months with regular wear, or sooner if you notice any looseness or fraying of the silk thread. Adelle Louise is pleased to arrange this service on your behalf.
