Jewellery Care

Wear, Ageing & What to Expect Over Time

Fine jewellery is designed to be worn and cherished. However, all precious metals and gemstones are subject to the natural effects of daily wear. Understanding these changes will help you care for your Adelle Louise pieces with confidence.

Precious Metals

Gold and platinum develop a natural patina over time. Small surface scratches are an inevitable part of wear and are not considered a defect. In fact, many connoisseurs appreciate the soft, lived-in lustre that develops on well-loved pieces. Should you prefer the original high polish, professional buffing and polishing can restore the finish.

White gold pieces are typically finished with a rhodium plating to achieve a bright, reflective surface. This plating will gradually wear away with use, revealing the warmer tone of the natural white gold beneath. Re-plating is a routine maintenance service and is not indicative of a manufacturing fault.

Settings & Claws

Claw settings, bezel edges, and pavé work are all subject to gradual wear. The fine metalwork that secures your stones will slowly thin over years of contact with surfaces, clothing, and skin. Regular in house check-ups ensure that any wear is identified and addressed before a stone or setting is at risk.

Stacking Rings

Stacking rings (such as wearing an engagement ring alongside a wedding band) is a timeless and beautiful way to style your jewellery. However, it’s important to understand that when rings sit flush against one another, they naturally create friction with daily wear. Over time, this contact can lead to increased abrasion, including metal wear, fine scratching, and in some cases, loosening of claws or settings.

While this is a normal part of wearing fine jewellery, we always recommend mindful wear and regular maintenance to preserve the longevity and integrity of your pieces. Periodic professional cleaning and inspection will ensure your rings remain as beautiful and secure as the day they were made.

Clasps & Findings

Clasps, jump rings, and other mechanical components may loosen over time through repeated opening and closing. This is considered normal wear rather than a defect. If you notice any change in the security of a clasp, we recommend having it assessed promptly.
