Natural Gemstone Care

Sapphire • Tourmaline • Ruby • Emerald • & Other Precious Gemstones

Each gemstone in an Adelle Louise piece has been hand-selected for its exceptional colour, clarity, and character. Natural gemstones are formed deep within the earth over millions of years, and while they are remarkably durable, mindful care will preserve their brilliance for a lifetime.

Understanding Hardness

Gemstone durability varies. Sapphires and rubies (corundum family, Mohs hardness 9) are among the most resilient gemstones available and are well-suited to frequent wear. Tourmaline (Mohs 7–7.5) is moderately hard and appropriate for everyday pieces worn with care. Emeralds, while treasured for their incomparable green, are more delicate (Mohs 7.5–8) and often contain natural inclusions known as “jardin,” which can make them more susceptible to impact damage.

Cleaning

For sapphires, rubies, and tourmalines, a gentle cleaning with lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent, using a very soft brush, is safe and effective. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Emeralds require particular caution. Many emeralds are treated with natural oils or resins to enhance clarity, and exposure to ultrasonic cleaners, steam, or harsh chemicals can compromise these treatments. Clean emeralds only with a soft, damp cloth.

Storage

Store each gemstone piece individually in a soft pouch or lined compartment. Harder stones such as sapphires and rubies can scratch softer gems and metals if stored together. The Adelle Louise presentation box provides an ideal environment for safekeeping.

What to Avoid

  • Sudden temperature changes, which may cause thermal shock in certain gemstones, particularly emeralds.
  • Ultrasonic and steam cleaning for emeralds, opals, and any treated or filled gemstones.
  • Direct and prolonged sunlight exposure, which may fade certain tourmaline and kunzite varieties over time.
  • Impact against hard surfaces. Even the hardest gemstones can chip or fracture if struck at the right angle along a cleavage plane.

Regular Inspection

We recommend having your gemstone jewellery inspected by us at least once a year. This allows for early detection of any loosened settings or worn prongs, helping to protect the security of your stones.
