Diamond Care

Diamonds are the hardest known natural material, rating 10 on the Mohs scale. However, “hard” does not mean indestructible. A diamond’s hardness refers to its resistance to scratching, not to impact. Diamonds can chip, fracture, or cleave if subjected to a sharp blow at the correct angle. With mindful wear and care, your diamond will retain its fire and brilliance indefinitely.

Cleaning

Diamonds are lipophilic, meaning they naturally attract oils and grease. This is the most common reason for a diamond appearing dull. To restore brilliance, soak your diamond piece in a solution of warm water and a small amount of mild dishwashing liquid for fifteen to twenty minutes, then gently brush with a very soft toothbrush, paying attention to the underside of the stone and around the prongs. Rinse under clean running water and dry with a lint-free cloth.

Professional ultrasonic cleaning is generally safe for diamonds without significant inclusions. However, we recommend consulting your jeweller first, as settings and accompanying stones may have different cleaning requirements.

Storage

While diamonds will not scratch other diamonds, they will readily scratch all other gemstones and precious metals. Always store diamond pieces separately, ideally in your Adelle Louise soft pouche/s or in the Adelle Louise box provided with your purchase.

What to Avoid

  • Wearing diamond rings during heavy manual work, exercise, or activities involving impact. A sharp knock can chip a diamond or damage the setting.
  • Allowing diamonds to come into contact with chlorine bleach or other harsh chemicals, which can damage the metal setting.
  • Touching the surface of your diamond unnecessarily. Oils from the skin diminish brilliance.

Setting Checks

We recommend inspection every six to twelve months. Prongs can wear down gradually through daily contact, and catching a loose prong early is the most effective way to prevent stone loss.
